CS Team

I enjoy engaging 6-12 graders learn how to think computationally! One of my methods is to take a team of my computer science students “on the road” a few days each semester. We present a variety of hands on demonstrations which expose students to computational thinking problems. These include building Lego Mindstorm robots, Google Lab activities, Alice, and RoboCode. Our preferred and most successful format is to work with a group of students for 3-4 hours.

Our favorite workshop and the one the students seem to enjoy the most (though they enjoy all of the ones we do) is the Lego Robotics Workshop. It consists of the following:

Session 1: Introduction to Robotics (20-30 minutes)
Session 2: Team Creation (10 minutes)
Session 3: Robot Creation (90-120 minutes)
Session 4: Competition (20 minutes)

The times for sessions 2-4 will vary depending on the number of students.
We have 8 Lego Mindstorm NXT Robotics Kits. It is best to have no more than 4 per kit, but 3 is better.

All that is needed is a table, chairs and power outlet for each team. We bring the necessary computers & software.

Ideally we like to do a workshop in the morning and one in the afternoon.

We would love to come to your school and engage the minds and hearts of your students to consider the greatness of our God as we work through creating robots!
Here are a few websites which tell the story of some of the great encounters we’ve had the past few years. If your school would be intersted in having us come for a day of exciting computational thinking activities, contact me via the email link in the upper right corner of woosters.org.
